Aboriginal history and culture was celebrated in the Mid West this week, with the Indigenous — and non-Indigenous — communities empowered to “get up, stand up and show” for NAIDOC Week.

This week’s motto reflects Indigenous people’s commitment and support of collaborative reforms, celebrating those who have led change throughout the decades for equal and basic human rights.

Beginning local NAIDOC Week events, Geraldton Regional Aboriginal Medical Service attended Rangeway Primary School on July 1 to promote healthy nutrition in students. The interactive session encouraged students to decipher which pictured foods were healthy or unhealthy.

The town of Mullewa gathered together on Wednesday for a day of celebration and Aboriginal entertainment.

Organised with Mullewa Community Resource Centre, the City of Greater Geraldton, MEEDAC, Yamaji Art, WA Centre for Rural Health and Mullewa Women’s Indigenous Group Inc, the event was a huge success among the community.

The Craig Pickett Band filled the crowd’s ears with live Indigenous music while guests indulged in a community lunch, sport and art activities, face painting and even a ninja course. Families had the opportunity to get a portrait photo taken, and explore a photographic exhibition.

On Thursday, GRAMS welcomed Geraldton residents to an outdoor Big Breakfast in Rangeway. From 8-11am, families gathered around tables to share breakfast and a yarn.

GRAMS tackling Indigenous smoking educator Brent Walker said the event had a brilliant turnout and it was heartwarming to see so many families attending.

“NAIDOC Week means all the mob come together and celebrate us, stand up and show up. This year’s topic is pretty good — it’s for all our mob to stand up and start doing stuff for ourselves.”

On Friday, the Geraldton Sporting Aboriginal Corporation will host a “NAIDOC in Spalding” event at the Community Centre on Mitchell Street. From 9am, people can join the yarning circle with coffee, damper and scones provided and be involved in the circle’s sing-a-long.

GRAMS will also host a cake cutting event on Friday with a morning tea at 10am for anyone who missed out on the Big Breakfast.
